Single Panel Canvas Prints

This is probably what you think of when you think of a canvas print: just one image on one stretched canvas. You’d want a single-panel canvas portrait if you’re just printing one single image or printing one of multiple images that don’t go together, like that aren’t part of a set or the same photography shoot.

You can get single-panel canvas prints in multiple shapes and sizes, which you can read about more below.

Multi-Panel Split Canvas Prints

Multi-panel split canvas prints are prints that are split among multiple. It’s sort of like a puzzle without the jagged edges — each panel is one part of the whole image and you hang the panels in a certain order to form the entire portrait. You might choose this kind of print if you want to create the illusion of a grid on an image or to create contrast.

Depending on the company you choose for printing, you might be able to choose where the splits occur, how many panels the image will come out in and other customizations.

Panoramic Print

A panoramic print on canvas is the same as it would be on paper — it’s a very long image that depicts a large area, like an entire city skyline. Panoramic images are longer than they are tall, giving the illusion of seeing the whole space. Most phones with cameras nowadays have a panoramic setting to take your own, which you could then transform into a panoramic print

Cluster Canvas Prints

Cluster canvas prints are a group of single-panel prints that have the same theme or subject. You might get cluster canvas prints if you have a few photos from the same family photo shoot, from your wedding, from a single vacation or of your favorite city.

Framed Canvas

Framed canvas prints have a frame around the canvas print, making it look more like a traditional portrait. These frames come in many different styles and colors. You might get an opulent frame to match your home’s traditional décor, a rustic wood canvas if your home has a country-home look or a plain white or black frame made from wood, plastic or metal for a contemporary style.

If you don’t opt for a framed canvas print, the company will ask if you want there to be a plain border around the image to create the illusion of a frame or if you want the image to extend off the front of the canvas and around the stretch frame. A framed canvas is typically more expensive.

Mini-Sized Canvas

Mini canvases are good for placing on shelves and accent tables or as part of a group of mixed-sized portraits. They come in the following sizes:

  • 4 x 4
  • 4 x 6
  • 6 x 6
  • 5 x 7

Small-to-Medium-Sized Canvas

These canvases work well on their own on thinner walls or as part of a group. You can find small and medium sizes like:

  • 8 x 10
  • 10 x 10
  • 11 x 14
  • 12 x 12
  • 14 x 16

Large and Oversized Canvas

Large canvases are meant to be focal pieces on their own, and those on the smaller end of this spectrum work as part of a mixed-size group. Oversize canvases are meant to hang on their own as statement pieces. You can find sizes like:

  • 20 x 20
  • 20 x 24
  • 24 x 24
  • 24 x 36
  • 30 x 40
  • 36 x 36

Shapes

Available shapes can depend on the printing company, but the most common include squares, rectangles, and hexagons.
