Working for a rideshare company, like Uber and Lyft, is a simple way for drivers to make money. Almost anyone can sign up to be a driver, as long as they and their car meet the company’s hiring requirements. Some drivers may qualify for one company but not another.

Not every person can be a rideshare driver. Rideshare companies have a responsibility to their customers, and they must hold their drivers to a standard dedicated to safety and responsibility.
During the application process, you will have to prove that you meet the driver requirements for the rideshare organization. Your application will include documents as evidence of you meeting the qualifications. Documentation needed includes:
- Driver’s license
- Auto insurance card
- Vehicle registration
Your license proves who you are, your age, and where you live. Age requirements for drivers can vary by location, but the minimum is typically 22 years of age.
Your driver’s license also shows where you live. Rideshare companies require drivers to live in the state, county, or city where you are applying. For example, if you live in New Jersey, you cannot be a rideshare driver in New York.
The rideshare company will screen you by looking at your driving record and criminal history. By applying to a rideshare company, you are agreeing to a background check and sharing your driving records.
The company may deny your application if you have certain things on either of those reports. For instance, Uber requires drivers to have at least three years of driving experience. The company will deny your application if you received your credentials in just the last couple of years.
You will also need to submit a profile picture. It must be an original photo, not one that is a copy or picture of a picture. Your profile pic should be only you, forward-facing in the center of the frame.
