8 Fewer Things to Worry About When Traveling During Covid

The increase in Covid vaccinations has many wanderlusts thinking about making travel plans. The pandemic caused many travel-related businesses to establish new policies and restrictions, such as needing to present a negative Covid test result before boarding an airplane. However, some of these new regulations have made travel less worrisome.

Getting a Refund for a Cancelation or Change
Getting a Refund for a Cancelation or Change

Travel-related businesses are being more flexible with refunds. For example, if the airline canceled or significantly changed your flight, you can get a refund. A significant change could be at least a three-hour difference before or after the original flight, depending on the airline.

These Covid rules apply even if your ticket was nonrefundable when you purchased it. You should review the terms of your ticket and the airline’s refund policies before purchasing and after cancelations and changes.

However, many airlines and travel agencies are discontinuing the refund policies as Covid cases decrease. You should check with the airline provider about changes to its policies with the recent uptick from the Delta variant.

Getting Miles and Points Returned

Booking with miles and points can feel like getting a free flight or hotel room. But airlines and hotels have limited flexibility when it comes to paying for travel with miles and points. From purchases to changes to cancelations, reward system purchases can be more complicated than cash and credit bookings.

Policies vary by airline programs, but you should be able to get your points and miles back. Refunds could be more complicated if you booked your flight or accommodations through a third party. For instance, if you used credit card points to book a flight, you may need to go through the credit card company instead of the airline.

Contact the provider with the reward system for changes and cancelations on your travel plans. While the organization should refund your points or miles for changes by the airline or hotel, you may need to show a valid reason for canceling the arrangements, such as contracting Covid.

Travel Insurance Covers More Than Before
Travel Insurance Covers More Than Before

For five to 10 percent of your trip cost, you can purchase travel insurance to reimburse you for trip cancelation. Policies typically cover:

  •     Emergency evacuations.
  •     Medical bills.
  •     Trip cancelation.
  •     Trip interruption.
  •     Lost luggage.
  •     Flight delays.
  •     Travel-supplier bankruptcy.
  •     Lost passport.
  •     Rental-car issues.

The coverage does not apply to any excuse. While policies differ, typically, they cover terrorist events, serious illnesses and injuries, death or birth of a family member, job loss, natural disasters, strikes, or divorce from your travel companion.

It did not cover cancelations from fear of flying. But with Covid illnesses, required quarantines, denied boarding, or infection surges in the place of destination, travel-insurance providers began to cover these occurrences.

Fewer Travelers and More Space to Move

The Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made several recommendations to decrease the number of new infections. Most of these suggestions were to have fewer people in groups and increasing distance between families or groups.

Airlines, museums, restaurants, and other businesses visited by tourists had to decrease capacity to make it safer for patrons. For those familiar with the crowds that flock around tourist attractions, the additional elbow room is a welcome change.

Imagine quieter dining establishments to enjoy your meal with your friends and family or having an empty middle seat on your flight. With fewer travelers, your trip is likely to be more comfortable than usual.

Change Fees Waived

Changes to your flight could cost you $50 to $200, even for domestic flights. International flights could cost hundreds to alter the date, destination, or name on the ticket.

Many airlines waived fees for changing flights abroad. Since certain countries closed their borders to U.S. citizens, airlines dropped their surcharges for delays and postponements.

Likewise, some airlines with substitute travelers with others. For instance, many older tourists want to gift their travel plans to younger members of their families. Airlines may accept a name change on a ticket more readily than canceling the fare.

No Pressure to Go Big or Stay Home
No Pressure to Go Big or Stay Home

Social media has changed the way we perceive success. Influencers and other highly followed people promote a glamorized lifestyle filled with first-class flights, five-star hotels, and Michelin-rated restaurants.

But with the health concerns about rejoining the public, many people are choosing to do staycations. Road trips are the new normal when it comes to social distancing vacations. From camping to visiting old friends, local retreats are a safer alternative to using public transportation and trips to foreign countries.

A road trip is also more affordable compared to the cost of some flights. Take advantage of your home states’ natural wonders and hot spots. Keep up with social distancing with a rural retreat in a cabin. Or check out the nearest metropolitan area.

Cleaner Everything

From restaurant tables to hotel rooms, every surface is receiving extra special cleaning. Covid changed sanitation standards, and the travel industry is taking sanitation seriously.

For instance, hotel rooms receive more than linen changes and bathrooms scrubbed. House cleaning disinfect all surfaces, including door handles, light switches, and stair railings.

The new cleaning standards are a relief if you or your family worries about the cleanliness of your accommodations. Combined with the additional distancing practices, germaphobes can relax a little easier knowing organizations disinfect surfaces.

More Organized Travel

The travel industry is making the booking experience more efficient and safer. Now, you can book online without having to print a boarding pass. By downloading the airline or hotel’s app, you can show the representative your reservation on your smartphone.

There are also more self-check-in services. AirBnb, for instance, has thousands of rentals that you can enjoy without coming interacting with anyone. Hosts use digital communication and can have keyless entry systems, so you can get information and access into your accommodations without being face-to-face.

By making travel more self-guided, tourists can have safer and more hygienic travels. Airlines, hotels, restaurants, and other travel vendors are meeting the needs of wanderlusts while keeping Covid in consideration.
