The rideshare industry has quickly grown into other services besides driving. Drivers can transport people and/or food through delivery services like UberEats and GrubHub. In certain cities, you can deliver packages with Uber Connect.

You will need to download the app for the rideshare program whether you are applying to Uber or Lyft. These services utilize smartphones to connect drivers to customers. Even if you apply through a computer, you will need a new phone to be able to communicate with customers.

Once you download the app, you can create a driver’s account. You can start the application with just your name, phone number, and email.

You do not need to have a vehicle to apply to be a rideshare driver. Both Uber and Lyft have rental car programs, so you can select:

  • ‘I have a car’ and proceed to enter information about yourself and your vehicle on the application.
  • ‘I need a car’ and proceed to enter information about yourself and the city you plan to drive in.

You will need to submit all requested documents by scanning and attaching them to your application when prompted. You will need a photo of your license, vehicle registration, car insurance, and you that is clear, well-lit, and shows your full face and shoulders.

It can take one to three business days for a representative to process your application. They will conduct a background check and request driving records. It can take several more days to get these documents.
